How to Repair Leather Upholstery
I have enjoyed this California King sized canopy bed with leather trimmings for many years. This was purchased in the early 2000s at Harlem Furniture. It retailed for around $8000 for the full bedpiece and dresser and mirror. Although the cherry wood and dark brown leather are very sturdy, durable and quality made, I have noticed that in some areas, the leather on the headboard has started to deteriorate. As we all know, upholstery repair can be very costly. Additionally, after the pandemic, it has become quite difficult to find a quality upholstery repair shop. Also, with upholstery repair, most times, the piece must be transported to the store. This being such a large piece, I decided to repair the headboard myself at home.
Items Needed For Repair:
- Scissors
- Utility Knife
- Pencil
- Ruler
- Soft Clean Cloth
- Hairdryer
- Leather Adhesive Repair Roll
- Tape Measurer
How to Apply:
- Ensure the area is clean and dry from any debris.
- Measure the area that is in need of repair
- Measure the leather adhesive repair roll to the same measurement of the needed repair.
- Mark the measurements on the adhesive leather roll.
5. PLEASE USE CAUTION while using your scissors/knife. Cut out the measured leather adhesive piece from roll.
6. Remove the backing paper from the back of the leather adhesive strip.
7. Align the leather adhesive strip with the damaged area.
8. While applying the leather adhesive strip, run your hand along the applied strip in order to smooth out the leather strip and remove any excess air bubbles under the strip.
9. At this point, if necessary, a second person can be called in to help hold the strip or smooth the applied strip. This job can be done alone, but a second person can assist in this step. The cloth can be used to assist with smoothing.
10. The hairdryer may be used from a distance to help adhere the glue to the applied area.
11. Wait 24 hours, check the surface to see if there are any further applications to be done.
View the linked photos for the successful results. This was such a successful and enjoyable project with a rewarding outcome. This made me realized that you do not need to take all items to a specialist in order for it to be repaired; you can do the repair yourself at home.
Things to think about while doing this repair:
Please be sure to match the leather adhesive closest color to the leather that is on your upholstery. The leathers must match in order to get the best-looking result on your damaged furniture.
